Types of Fossils There are two main types of fossils: body fossils and trace fossils.A body fossil is the physical remains of an animal. Some very small organisms, called microbacteria, leave behind microscopic particles called filaments.Relative age dating also means paying attention to crosscutting relationships.Say for example that a volcanic dike, or a fault, cuts across several sedimentary layers, or maybe through another volcanic rock type.The results can be as much as 150 million years different from each other!
